About Hokitika, New Zealand
Hokitika is famous for its arts & crafts. Watch a masterpiece being crafted from gold, silver, molten glass, paua, ‘Ruby Rock’ a unique Hokitika gemstone, bone, and greywacke or carve your own creation from wood or jade (pounamu).
Take in Hokitika’s natural beauty, enjoy its expansive beach, or venture down one of the many walking and mountain bike tracks. Plus view Kiwis at the National Kiwi Centre.
Just a short drive inland from Hokitika is Lake Kaniere, home to holiday homes referred to as baches in New Zealand. This is a popular fishing and water sports lake. Further inland is the Hokitika Gorge. A short walk takes you into the gorge, where a vivid turquoise glacial river flows through a deep chasm. This very cold river is surrounded by lush native bush and trout can often be easily spotted near the surface of the water.
